You say 'Beaufort', I say 'Beaufort'

Low Country

Drove the Jeep from FL to CT via the coastal route. First stop was Beaufort in the South Carolina Low Country. Met up with fellow Northwestern and Horace Greeley HS graduate John and his wife, Mary Ann who live in this charming coastal community. We stayed at the Beaufort Inn and had dinner at Plums looking out over the town square to the Intercoastal Waterway.

You Say Beaufort, I say Beaufort
From Beaufort, (SC) we drove to Beaufort (NC). Although pronounced differently, it is also situated directly on the waterfront on the Intercoastal waterway. Our hotel, the Inlet Inn, overlooked a small marina where a few transients were docked for the night - from 30 foot sailboats to 80 foot power cruisers. Had dinner at The Market restaurant where Paul sampled the local Trigger Fish.

Piracy: Hostile Takeover Without the Paperwork

Headed north from Beaufort to the ferry at Cedar Island, NC. 2:15 minute ride across Pamlico Sound to the little village of Ocracoke. Pirate country. Ocracoke Inlet was Edward Teach's (Blackbeard) favorite anchorage. It was a perfect location from which to view ships traveling between the settlements of northeast Carolina and we could see why he chose it. Lunch and shopping before heading onto the next ferry to Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks. Only 123 miles in Jeep today but still an 8 hour day.

First Flight

While in Kitty Hawk, we had to check out Kill Devil Hills where Wilbur and Orville made the first powered flight back in 1903 which in turn led to airports, lunar landings, frequent flier mileage and long lines at security checkpoints. Very impressive site you do not want to miss. The town was named for the rum "that could kill the devil". Afterward, we headed north towards the 12 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel which deposited us on to the Delmarva Peninsula. Our next stop was a slight detour to Chincoteague Island to see the famous ponies and National Seashore. We drove the final 6 hours to Candlewood Lake, arriving at 11:30PM.
